Step 9: Activate Your Homesowners Insurance
Just like everything else that you purchase, you will want to shop for your Homeowners Insurance also. Interview one or two Insurance companies and get a feel for their coverage, their requirements for coverage, and their deductibles.
You will find, many times, that all these items will vary and could affect your annual Insurance Premium.
We once had a Client who was told that they needed flood insurance because they lived next to a small creek. This we could not understand. After spending time on research and having the property checked by a reputable Company we found that they were in fact NOT IN A FLOODPLAIN and did not need Flood insurance. This was a very large savings on an annual basis to this young couple.
The Insurance Company will require an Inspection of the Property by one of their representatives before they agree to provide you with coverage and some may have requirements of the home that may need adjusted before they agree to provide coverage to you. For example, many townships and Insurance companies now require that all pools be fenced in due to liability.
Do your homework, do your research, and then Interview a few Companies. You could save yourself in better coverage for a better price.
