911 County-wide Readdressing Systems for your Safety.
The 911 county-wide readdressing system has been in the works for over 2 years in Monroe County. I believe that most of it is complete, if not all of it.
The Life you save may be your own!
This is an important Safety measure for all residents, full time or seasonal. This major undertaking is to make it easier and faster for first responders to find you.
In the past we have had many street names that were duplicates of each other within the same municipality, very confusing for first responders. One of the objectives of the 911 readdressing was to make sure that there were no duplicate street names within a Municipality.
Personally, I do not think there should be any duplicates within the County. All of us, and our clients, would have a much easier time of finding locations with our GPS systems, if there were not.
Our old addresses used to be things like; R.D.#1, Box 740 or HC#1 Box 740. How could a first responder find you with that kind of an address? Now we all have specific numbers to our Street name, as it should be.
This was a GOOD change for all of us.
Your new number is to be displayed with fluorescent numbering at the intersection of your driveway with the municipal/state/rural roadway, where it is easy for first responders to see it when racing down the street/road to get to you. NOT on your house, NOT on a tree - at the roadway.
Your new number is supposed to be on a specific sign with the fluorescent numbers and most of us were to pick up these signs and numbers at our respective Township buildings. When and where have been well publicized. NOT a piece of cardboard tacked to the tree closest to the road. The numbers are FLUORESCENT for a very good reason - they are highly visible to the headlights of the first responders.
Needless to say the posting of these new 911 numbers also needs to be high enough so that they are not buried by the snowplows in the winter time too. Think ahead when putting your number signs out by the road.
SEASONAL HOMEOWNERS - Do not ignore this notification when you receive it! Just because you do not live there full time does not mean you will not need a first responder at some point and ALSO, if you are trying to sell your home mortgage companies are requiring that the new 911 address be used on all the documentation. If you have not taken the time to get your New 911 address and number and installed a sign at your property, PLEASE DO SO!
